An EIN, or Employer Identification Number, is the number the IRS uses to identify a business. Think of it as a Social Security number for your company.
When you need one
You'll generally need an EIN if you hire employees, form a corporation or partnership, or open a business bank account that asks for one. Many single-member LLCs get one even when it isn't strictly required, so they don't have to give out the owner's Social Security number.
What it costs
Nothing. The IRS says you never have to pay a fee for an EIN, and it warns about websites that charge for one. If a site asks for a credit card to get your EIN, you're not on the IRS website.
How fast you get it
If you apply online and your application is approved, the IRS issues the EIN immediately. The online application has to be finished in one session and times out after 15 minutes without activity, so have your information ready.
Who can apply online
The business must be formed in the U.S. or a U.S. territory with its principal place of business there, and the responsible party needs a Social Security number or an ITIN. If you can't apply online, the IRS also accepts applications by phone, fax or mail.
