A U.S. notary is not a "notario": what a notary can and can't do

V.A.M. Professional Services · October 17, 2026

In many Latin American countries, a notario is a lawyer with special training. In the United States, a notary public is something very different, and the confusion costs people money.

What a notary does

A notary public verifies the identity of the person signing a document and witnesses the signature. In Utah, the signer must appear in person before the notary; a video call does not count.

What a notary can't do

Under Utah's notary rules, a notary may not give legal advice or draft a document they will notarize. That requires a licensed Utah attorney. If someone offers immigration or legal help because they are a "notario," be careful.

What to bring

Bring a current government-issued photo ID and your complete document.
